Gauteng processes over 210 000 Grade 1 and 8 online applications on first day
The Gauteng Department of Education successfully processed more than 210,000 online applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 public schools on the first day of the 2027 admissions process.
Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile officially launched the online admissions process in Thokoza on the East Rand on Wednesday, where he assisted parents and guardians with submitting applications.
Maile said the system functioned smoothly throughout the day, with no major technical issues.
"The application process has proceeded smoothly without any major technical incidents, and we urge all parents and guardians not to wait until the closing days of the application period," he said.
Since its introduction in 2015, the Gauteng Online Admissions System has replaced long queues outside schools with a digital platform aimed at making the admissions process fairer, more transparent and efficient.
"Parents must complete all five application steps, apply to a minimum of three and a maximum of five schools, and upload or submit all certified supporting documents within seven days of submitting their applications," he added.
The department also warned parents to be vigilant against fraudsters who claim to represent the Gauteng Department of Education or promise guaranteed school placements in exchange for payment.
Parents who require assistance can visit one of the department's walk-in centres.
PARENTS HAIL 'EFFICIENT' SYSTEM
One of the parents, Bongani Mohale, encouraged parents to embrace the online system.
"I think we, as parents, must try to make use of these online services and familiarise ourselves with these online systems. I encourage all parents to take advantage of this opportunity and apply for their children," he said.
Mohale urged parents not to delay their applications, saying early submissions would help avoid the rush often experienced in January when schools reopen.
Another parent, Cynthia Selepe, praised the department for making the application process quick and efficient.
"The process was actually quite easy. I joined the queue, and it didn't even take ten minutes. Everything went smoothly," she said.
Selepe added that she was impressed with how efficiently the system worked.
"I think everything is working well. It's amazing. For a change, we are moving in the right direction," she said.
Applications for the 2027 academic year close on 4 September.
