Gauteng SAPS fires 29 police officers
At least 29 Gauteng police officers have been dismissed over corruption and other forms of misconduct in the past three months, provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba said on Thursday.
Speaking to media at a press conference at the Gauteng South African Police Services (SAPS) in Johannesburg, Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba said the Gauteng SAPS had arrested 93 officers for corruption and misconduct in the same period.
”Twenty nine [officers] have been dismissed from the service as a result of misconduct and corruption, while seven of the 93 arrested remain in custody after bail was opposed,” he said.
”Forty-five members are on suspension without pay, and eight were suspended with pay,” he said.
Mothiba added that the involvement of officers in crime undermined the stability of the police service.
”I must emphasis that for these acts to manifest, there must be a corruptor and a corruptee…we appeal to communities to report any misconduct or criminal activities by our members as we work on rooting out the bad apples among us,” Mothiba said.
