Gauteng scholar transport operators warned to comply

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela has warned scholar transport operators to ensure they comply with all the necessary regulations.
The warning comes ahead of the reopening of schools in the province on Wednesday.
The 2024 academic year was marred by several deadly crashes involving scholar transport operators.
In one of the crashes, 12 pupils from Rocklands Primary School and Laerskool Blyvooruitsig in Carletonville were killed in an early morning crash in July.
The department’s spokesperson, Lesiba Mpya, said traffic law enforcement officials will conduct routine checks at the start of the school year.
Mpya warned school transport owners who do not comply with operating licensing regulations that they will face the full might of the law.
“The department has issued a notice to all scholar transport operators, through their various associations, to ensure they operate legally and that vehicles are roadworthy,” Mpya said.
“The MEC further warned that operators who do not possess valid operating licenses will not be allowed to transport learners and may have their vehicles fined or impounded.”
