GBV tops agenda of Gauteng’s new Social Development MEC
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Gauteng Premier David Makhura has appointed Thembi Mokgethi as the province’s new MEC for Social Development.
Mokgethi succeeds the late Thuliswa Nkabinde-Khawe, who passed on in November 2019.
Makhura says Nkabinde Khawe's death was a painful episode for many in the province.
"Her untimely passing inflicted incalculable pain in the hearts of millions of people in our province - women, people with disabilities, older persons and children - whom she served with utmost dedication and distinction.”
Mokgethi has extensive experience in government having served as municipal manager in different local municipalities over the past 27 years.
"She also has extensive organisational and political experience, having served in different structures of the ANC, ANC Women’s League and alliance in Gauteng," says Makhura.
“She will ensure that the Department of Social Development becomes an agent for social transformation and sustainable development.
"One of the new MEC’s urgent tasks will be to lead the battle against gender-based violence. We must end gender-based violence and the killing of children now."
