Gender Commission welcomes Manana's resignation

However, the Commission says despite Manana's long awaited resignation, they believe that it has come a little too late.

Spokesperson for the Commission, Javu Baloyi, says even though Manana has resigned, the law still needs to take its course. 

Baloyi says given the tardiness of Manana's resignation, an impression has been created that government is morally ambivalent about the seriousness of gender-based violence.

Meanwhile, Baloyi also reacted to a social media post by HIV activist, Criselda Kananda Dudumashe. 

In a controversial Facebook post, Dudumashe starts by experessing her disappointment in Manana’s actions but also goes on to defend him, describing him as a well-educated and a kind-hearted public servant who is deeply remorseful for his actions.

Baloyi says the commission has advised Dudumashe to issue a public apology.

Manana has been charged with two counts of assault following an incident at a Fourways nightclub.

The incident was caught on video and went viral on social media.

He later appeared in the Randburg magistrate's court on two charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Manana was granted R5,000 bail. He will appear in court again on the 13 September.
