Gerrie Nel: Justice must be done
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
The head of Afriforum's private prosecuting unit, Gerrie Nel, says the private prosecution of Duduzane Zuma has nothing to do with the identity of his father.
Afriforum announced on Tuesday that it has filed papers to prosecute Duduzane Zuma for culpable homicide.
This relates to crash on the M1 in 2014 which claimed the life of Phumzile Dube.
In 2015 the NPA decided not to prosecute Zuma, despite a judicial inquest finding prima facie evidence that negligence on the part of Zuma led to Dube's death.
"The NPA never informed the Dube family of its decision not to prosecute Mr Zuma. This decision was only revealed after the so-called Gupta emails had surfaced," said Nel.
If the NPA issues the nolle prosequi certificate, AfriForum would have to start the private prosecution process within 90 days.
"The Dube family has received no financial assistance since the accident other than R5000 from the taxi association. We will await the issuing of the certificate and if there are any delays we will take action," said Nel.
