Gigaba: SAA turnaround strategy due in September
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
Finance minister Malusi Gigaba, says government should have a turnaround strategy for the cash-stripped South African Airways (SAA).
He made the announcement at a briefing on Friday.
It follows a meeting with CEOs and Business Leadership South Africa.
"All of these issues need to be done in order for us to bring SAA to stability. We should have gone to cabinet before the end of September to propose the options available for a decision," Gigaba says.
On Wednesday, DA MP Alf Lees told Parliament he was in possession of a secret document which suggests government is planning on selling its Telkom shares to bail out the embattled national carrier.
Gigaba would not confirm the details of the document, but warned that leaking it was a criminal offence.
He also says it's time for SAA board chairperson Dudu Myeni to handover her position to someone else.
"There is a feeling that the current chairperson is being demonised and unfairly attacked. The issue is just about good governance. She has served for 8 years, 2 of which was more than she was supposed to."
