Girl (5) dies in pit latrine at KZN daycare
KwaZulu-Natal officials have confirmed that the daycare centre where a 5-year-old child died last week was not registered.
The girl was found dead in a pit latrine at a crèche in Pinetown, west of Durban.
It's understood a group of children had been taken to the toilet when the child disappeared.
The teacher apparently only realised while doing a headcount later.
But the child's mother Nana Nyembe says she doesn’t believe she has been told the whole story by staff at the daycare.
"The teacher must say something besides what she said. She never come to me, she didn't say any word besides that the child goes behind the house and the other child told her that Elihle is going behind the house and when she came looking for Elihle she didn't find Elihle there,” says the bereaved parent.
KZN Social Development spokesperson Mhlabunzima Memela says the family is receiving support to help cope with the tragic ordeal.
"When the social workers were assigned there, it turned out that that institution that enrolled about 47 children was not actually registered with the department.
"It is a terrible incident that no one would have expected it, but the MEC has also warned parents not to enroll their children in an unregistered ECD creche or daycare centres,” he adds.
