GNU focused on eradicating youth unemployment - Mashatile

Deputy President Paul Mashatile says the government of national unity remains committed to easing youth unemployment through the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention.
The country's unemployment rate increased from 32.9% in the first quarter of 2024 to 33.5% in the second quarter.
The statistics for young people are even more dire, with a 45,5% unemployment rate among people aged 15 to 34 years.
Mashatile delivered his keynote address at the National Economic Development Labour Council's annual summit in Johannesburg on Friday.
He said the government's goal is to encourage fixed capital investment, industrialisation, job creation and the transformation of people's lives.
"The government of national unity has resolved to dedicate the next five years to actions that will advance three strategic priorities: to drive inclusive growth and job creation, reduce poverty and the high cost of living, to build a capable ethical and developmental state.
"Despite the lack of agreement on the comprehensive social compact, the experience of social dialogue and compacting has proven invaluable. The principles of social dialogue guide the government as it strives towards a shared objective.
“The government is committed to involving public participation and social partners in addressing economics, unemployment, inclusion, service delivery, social protection and combatting corruption, sexism, racism and homophobia.”
