Govt assures stable fuel supply, warns of possible fuel price hikes
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has assured motorists that the country’s fuel supply remains stable despite rising global oil prices linked to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The department says it is closely monitoring developments in global oil markets and remains in constant contact with oil companies operating in the country to ensure fuel security.
Department spokesperson Lerato Ntsoko says there is currently no immediate risk of fuel shortages in South Africa.
"The department remains in continuous contact with oil companies operating in the country to ensure the stability and security of fuel supply while closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and their potential impact on global oil markets and fuel prices."
Despite the closure of several refineries in recent years, the department says the country still has two operational crude oil refineries - NATREF and Astron Energy - as well as the Sasol Secunda coal-to-liquids plant, which plays a significant role in domestic fuel production.
The country relies on imported crude oil, mainly from West Africa and other African countries to sustain refinery operations.
The department also confirmed that the Astron Energy refinery is currently undergoing a planned maintenance shutdown.
However, it says the company has secured sufficient fuel imports to ensure supply remains uninterrupted during the maintenance period.
While supply remains stable, motorists could face higher fuel prices in the coming months.
Ntsoko says the continued increase in international crude oil prices is likely to push fuel prices higher from April.
"Unfortunately, the continued rise in international crude oil prices is expected to result in higher fuel prices at the pump from April 2026."
The department says oil companies importing refined petroleum products from countries affected by the conflict are already exploring alternative supply sources to prevent disruptions in the domestic market.
Officials say they remain hopeful that geopolitical tensions will ease soon, which could help stabilise global oil markets and ease pressure on fuel prices.
