Govt condemns deadly violence in Western Cape, urges calm and cooperation
The government has strongly condemned the recent outbreak of violence in parts of the Western Cape, including deadly clashes in Mossel Bay and a separate shooting incident in Nyanga.
In a statement, Deputy Government Spokesperson William Baloyi expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the weekend violence.
"Government condemns the violent clashes that occurred over the weekend in Mossel Bay and sends its deepest condolences to families of those who lost their lives."
Authorities have welcomed the swift action taken by law enforcement following the incidents, confirming that arrests have already been made in connection with the Mossel Bay violence.
"Government calls on residents to work closely with law enforcement agencies in the investigations and welcomes the speedy arrests of the suspects related to the violence," Baloyi added.
The government also raised concern over a separate shooting in Nyanga, which claimed the lives of innocent people amid ongoing taxi-related violence in the area.
Baloyi assured the public that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is actively investigating both incidents.
"Government assures the public that the South African Police Service is investigating these matters and will leave no stone unturned in apprehending the perpetrators of these incidents and ensure that they face the full might of the law."
Government further emphasised its broader commitment to tackling crime and violence across the country, while urging communities to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
"Government calls on members of the public to address all concerns relating to crime and undocumented migration through lawful and legal processes, and not through violence, intimidation or attacks on individuals based on nationality, ethnicity, language or cultural identity," Baloyi said.
Citizens have also been encouraged to act responsibly when sharing information, particularly on social media platforms, to prevent the spread of misinformation.
"Government encourages citizens to obtain information from credible and verified sources and to refrain from sharing unverified information that may cause unnecessary panic, confusion or misinformation," he said.
Authorities say investigations remain ongoing, with further updates expected as law enforcement continues efforts to restore calm and ensure accountability.
