Govt corrects diesel price error in May fuel hike
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has corrected an error it made on the price of diesel for May.
On Monday, the department announced that the wholesale price of diesel would be hiked by R6,19 per litre instead of the correct R5,27 per litre.
"During the calculation of fuel prices for May 2026, the additional 93.00 cents per litre reduction in the fuel levy on diesel was erroneously captured as 0.93 cents per litre,” the department said in a statement on Tuesday.
"This resulted in a higher increase in the wholesale price of R6,19 per litre instead of R5,27 per litre for diesel."
Petrol prices will go up by R3.27 per litre, while illuminating paraffin, a vital energy source for many households, will increase by R4.22 per litre.
"The error is highly regrettable, and the department apologises for any inconvenience caused ahead of the fuel price adjustment," the statement read.
The new fuel prices are effective from Wednesday.
