Govt 'deeply concerned' over escalating crisis in Gulf
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The government says it is deeply concerned by the escalating crisis in the Gulf, as the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran continues.
The war which began last Saturday, has left over 1,000 people dead, including an unknown number of women and children.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) said the developments risk widening the conflict with grave implications for regional and international peace and security.
DIRCO said the principles are fundamental to the international rules‑based order and must be upheld by all United Nations member states.
"South Africa is equally alarmed by Israel’s continued military operations in Lebanon, which have resulted in civilian casualties, the destruction of essential infrastructure, and the displacement of communities,” Dirco said in a statement.
South Africa also condemned retaliation by Iran against several Gulf countries.
Iran has been targeting US military installations in courtiers including Qatar, Bahrain and UAE.
The department has urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint.
"This moment demands a renewed commitment to diplomacy, South Africa remains steadfast in its belief that there is no military solution to this crisis.
"We call on all stakeholders to prioritise de‑escalation, avoid further confrontation, and return to negotiations through established multilateral mechanisms under the auspices of the United Nations."
