The provisional 18th bill to amend the Constitution was published for public comment in the Government Gazette on Friday.

The chairman of the ad hoc committee to amend section 25 Mathole Motshekga has urged South Africans to make their opinions known.

Closing dates for written submission is January 31, where after public hearings will be held.

"We have called on the public to make submissions. The closing date is the end of January and then from there we'll also hold public hearing to afford all the people in all provinces an opportunity to make further comments so that when we draft the final amendment we are informed by what people of South Africa both black and white are saying.”

Motshekga says he is hoping the process will be finalised by March next year in order to ensure stability.

"We want to get Parliament to pass the amendment at the end of March because we want to create certainty and stability in the country because at the moment people think we are going to the Zimbabwe route and that's not where we are going.”
