Gupta arrests: DA wants transparency, Cope says step in right direction
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Opposition parties have been quick to react to the arrest of Gupta brothers Atul and Rajesh in Dubai.
The Justice Ministry confirmed their arrest on Monday night.
The arrests came after the report by the commission of inquiry into state capture fingered the two in the massive plundering of state institutions during former president Jacob Zuma's era.
DA national spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube has called for transparency, saying they will be monitoring the process.
"We hope that this is indeed the beginning of arrests and prosecution of those who have - locally and abroad - looted our country for years and are directly responsible for the hardships that millions of South Africans face today.
"The DA has noted the confirmation by the Department of Justice, and we look forward to more information regarding the arrests and the process that will be followed these arrests. It is of absolute importance that there is transparency on this matter.
Congress of the People spokesperson Dennis Bloem also believes it's a step in the right direction.
"You can run but you cannot hide. The Guptas thought that they are untouchable and above the law and that their dirty stolen money will keep them out of jail. Cope is extremely happy with the arrest of the two Gupta brothers.
"The arrest of the two Guptas once again gives us renewed hope that our criminal justice system is hard at work to put all these thieves behind bars. It is an open secret that these Guptas have destroyed the criminal justice system, the evidence is there in the Zondo Commission reports."
