Gupta family: 'Email reports are political'

The Gupta family believes the Sunday newspaper reports, further implicating them in state capture, are politically motivated.

The family's lawyer Gert van der Merwe says the reports on the emails are part of factional battles playing out at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the African National Congress (ANC).

"We don't know where these emails come from or how authentic they are.

"What I have done is to request the copies of the emails so that I can see what the stories rely on. Only then can I be in a position to comment and at least know the source of the emails," Van der Merwe says.

Explosive details emerged this morning, pointing to the Gupta family's undue influence over government decisions.

The Sunday Times revealed details of how a minister allegedly reported government plans to the Gupta family, even before they were discussed at Cabinet meetings.

The newspaper also divulged details of how President Zuma is apparently planning on taking up residency in Dubai when his term comes to an end.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) is consulting its lawyers over the emails.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane says the party is consulting with its lawyers over possible legal action against President Zuma, the Gupta family and all those implicated in the emails.
