Gwarube adamant all Gauteng pupils will be placed

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube remained adamant on Wednesday that all unplaced pupils in Gauteng will be provided with a desk.
The minister confirmed that in Gauteng alone, over 3,000 pupils are currently without a placement.
The department's district offices are experiencing long queues as parents scramble to secure spaces for their children for the 2026 academic year.
Gwarube said one of the causes of late applications is the migration of parents who flock to Gauteng in search of work opportunities.
She spoke to the media at Tshenolo Primary School in Letllhabile, outside Brits in the North West, on Wednesday, where she was monitoring the reopening of schools.
"I want to make an assurance to the parents that, while they may be anxious about the unplaced learners, we will not stop until every single learner is in school,” she said.
Since the beginning of the month, thousands of parents have been storming the department’s offices with the hope of securing space for their children.
Gauteng Education MEC Motome Chiloane says 13 of the 26 schools under construction are nearing completion, and all those stranded would have found schools by the end of the month.
