Hawks bust R25million drug lab
A major drug lab was uncovered in Zuurbekom, Gauteng, on Tuesday.
Drugs to the value of R25million was seized during a joint operation between Hawks’ teams from the Vaal and the Western Cape.
Five suspects between the ages of 27 and 78 were arrested.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says the operation began two weeks ago when members received information of a laboratory manufacturing and transporting mandrax tablets to clients in the Western Cape.
“We are trying to ascertain whether the suspects can be linked to similar cases,” Mulaudzi says. “We have reason to believe they were transporting the drugs to Cape Town. Our investigation will therefore also have to look at the drug trade between Gauteng and Cape Town.”
The Hawks have in the recent months managed to close four major drug labs in Gauteng, the Northern Cape and Mpumalanga.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
