Hawks confirm Guptas probe
Updated | By Nathan Daniels & Laila Majiet
The Hawks have confirmed they are investigating certain allegations contained in the so-called Gupta Leaks.
Thousands of emails have been leaked implicating the Gupta family in state capture.
The emails first came to light in June.
However, the Guptas insists the emails are fake.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says the matter of the lavish Gupta wedding was raised in Parliament.
"There is an investigation. It is a broader investigation, so to only look into the wedding would be wrong," he explains.
It's alleged that the wedding at Sun City in 2013, had been bankrolled by taxpayers.
AmaBhungane and Scorpio revealed in a series of exposes how R30million which was intended for a dairy project in Vrede in the Free State was diverted through a web of Gupta-related companies to pay for the wedding.
It happened while mineral resources minister Mosebenzi Zwane was still an MEC in the Free State.
DA shadow minister of finance, David Maynier says he's delighted that an investigation has been initiated.
"I expect them to investigate this matter without fear or favour. I am going to hold them accountable for doing their jobs," he says.
