Hawks nab two more for inciting public violence in Gauteng, KZN
The Hawks have arrested two suspects in connection with July’s civil unrest in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
More than 300 people died during a wave of violence and looting in the two provinces, initially sparked by the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma.
"The KZN suspect, a 35-year-old man was allegedly involved in the incitement of public violence through social media and other platforms during the period of unrest in that province," says Hawks spokesperson, Katlego Mogale.
"The suspect is linked to the looting and violence at Brookside Mall in Pietermaritzburg, which led to the total destruction of the shopping centre after it was set alight."
He is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
"The Gauteng suspect - a 36-year-old woman who operated as Sphithiphithi Evaluator @ African Soil on Twitter with a followership of 59900 people - was arrested during a search-and-seizure operation in Leondale in Alberton, which resulted in the confiscation of exhibits for further investigation," Mogale explains.
"She is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates court on Monday on charges of incitement to commit public violence.”
