The South African Weather Service has warned of heatwave conditions over parts of the country from Wednesday into the weekend.
Heatwave conditions are expected for the central and eastern parts of the country.
“For today (Wednesday), the temperatures that we are looking at, for example, for Pretoria, we are expecting to reach about 35 degrees, Johannesburg 32/33 and Vereeniging 33/34 and we expect similar temperatures around the heatwave period,” said SAWS forecaster Ishmael Moyo.
"Looking at the entire country, the provinces include Eastern Cape, Free State, North West and Northern Cape. The heatwave is expected today (Wednesday) extending into Thursday.
"The remainder of the Gauteng province and western parts of Mpumalanga are expected to experience heatwave conditions from today (Wednesday)up to at least Saturday."
Isolated showers and thundershowers are also expected from Wednesday afternoon over Gauteng, the extreme western parts of Mpumalanga and the eastern areas of the North West.
"We are expecting some thunderstorms over the eastern interior where we have a 30% chance. The provinces that can experience the change of weather are the eastern parts of North West, Gauteng, extreme eastern parts of Free State, western parts of Mpumalanga, eastern parts of the Eastern Cape and the extreme parts of southern KwaZulu-Natal,” Moyo said.
"For tomorrow (Thursday), there could be a better chance (of showers), especially for the South Coast, but those areas don’t really expect much in terms of heatwave conditions. In the eastern interior, we still expect a 30% chance for those showers and thundershowers tomorrow and also the southern parts of KZN.”
