Incumbent John Steenhuisen announced in February that he would not stand for a third term as DA leader at the party’s federal congress in April.

Hill-Lewis, who is the party's deputy leader in the Western Cape, made the announcement during a briefing on the Cape Flats on Friday.

He told supporters that he wants to build a stronger party that will, in turn, build a stronger country.

“We know that South Africa can work, and I want to help make it so, and that is why it is with a sense of pride and excitement that I today announce that I am standing to be the next leader of the Democratic Alliance.”

Hill-Lewis, 39, became mayor in 2021 of the touristy city seen as among the better-managed municipalities in the country.

During his speech, Hill-Lewis highlighted key priorities which he believes will strengthen the party over the next three years.

“We must show that the DA governs well and improves people's lives. Where we govern, the basics are taken seriously. Budgets are managed. Competent people are appointed. Institutions are protected and function. Services are delivered.

“We must show that enterprise, allied with compassion, is the way to achieve growth and jobs without leaving anyone behind.”

Hill-Lewis also expressed his support for the Government of National Unity, stating that it represents the best chance the country has had in two decades.

Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, and the former mayor of the City of Tshwane, Cilliers Brink, announced during the briefing that they are nominating Hill-Lewis for federal leader.

“He understands the complex issues of how to grow our economy, how to create jobs and opportunities for young people. We have seen him in government making difficult decisions, standing up for the rule of law, even though the pressure of the moment didn't allow it. He stood up,” said Brink.

Meanwhile, Gauteng DA leader Solly Msimanga has thrown his hat in the ring for the federal council chairperson position.

The position is currently occupied by Helen Zille.
