Hlaudi Motsoeneng makes first payment to Solidarity
Updated | By Thabo Tshabalala
Former SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng has made a first payment of R300 000 to trade union Solidarity.
The payment comes after Solidarity embarked on a process to seize his property.
According to the unionm the Labour Court ruled in 2017 that Motsoeneng was personally liable for the legal costs incurred in the case involving the so-called SABC8.
The journalists were suspended in 2016 after speaking out against the censorship at the public broadcaster but the court later found their dismissal to have been unlawful.
The union's Anton Van der Blij says the payment made is only a part of what Motsoeneng owes.
"The final amount owing will be determined once the costs associated with the Constitutional Court ruling which Motsoeneng also lost, have been paid and included in the final amount due.
"At this point in time it's a bit difficult to say what is outstanding.”
Solidarity will use Motsoeneng’s payment in court cases involving tax abuse.
