Home Affairs offices to be open on voter registration weekend
The IEC will hold a voter registration weekend on Saturday and Sunday ahead of the upcoming local government elections on 1 November.
The Department of Home Affairs said its offices will be open this weekend to accommodate people who want to collect identity documents for the voter registration weekend.
Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said his department will also be issuing temporary ID certificates.
“People who don’t have an ID but want to register we will help them. They will get a temporary identification certificate; it is accepted as identification by the IEC, you can go and register.
“The district with most uncollected IDs is Tshwane. That is a problem in Gauteng, compared to Johannesburg, which has the biggest population”
The department will offer other services including manual verification and issues with duplicates.
Motsoaledi conceded that IT systems at Home Affairs offices remain a problem
“The system downtime is our weakest link, and it is giving us sleepless nights, we have deployed 49 IT technicians nationwide to deal with the issue, but we can’t guarantee that there won’t be downtime.”
