Housing protest erupts in the south of Johannesburg

Residents of various suburbs in the south of Johannesburg have been protesting since the early hours of this morning over allegations that informal settlements in the area will be removed.
The protest which began just after 1am, is affecting large parts of Lawley and Lenasia South.
Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says the protestors have blocked off the K43 and the old Lawley Road with burning tyres and rocks.

“JMPD police officers have been deployed since midnight and the protest is over a big area. There has been sporadic throwing of rocks as well as tyres that have been pushed to the side of the road,” warns Minnaar.
Motorists have been asked to use the Golden Highway as an alternative route.
