IEC slams parties claiming early victories

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has slammed political parties for claiming early victories in the local government elections.
The commission says while almost 97% of the results have been captured, it would only give the go-ahead for announcements after the tallies are complete.
This means 62 500 of the 64 502 expected results have been logged onto the system and are awaiting scanning and auditing.
The Northern Cape is still ahead with capturing, while Limpopo, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal are among the provinces lagging behind.
IEC general manager Granville Abrahams said the commission plans to finalise results expeditiously.
“We are slowly but surely coming to an end,” he told media at the national elections centre in Tshwane.
IEC vice chairperson Janet Love also raised an eyebrow at parties calling early results.
This includes the Democratic Alliance (DA) which has claimed victories in Midvaal in Gauteng, uMngeni in KwaZulu-Natal and Kouga in the Eastern Cape.
“Many of those results may not have passed the kind of steady controls that are there,” said Love.
“It’s important to see that for what it is, it’s opinion.”
