IEC wraps up final registration weekend ahead of elections
The Electoral Commission is expected to announce the outcome of the latest voter registration drive on Monday following the closure of voting station-based registration ahead of the 4 November local government elections.
Physical voter registration at voting stations officially came to an end on Sunday, marking the conclusion of the final registration weekend.
While registration at voting stations has closed, eligible South Africans can still register and update their details through the IEC's online registration portal until the proclamation of the election date.
IEC spokesperson Sy Mamabolo has encouraged those who still need to update their details online to do so as soon as possible.
Mamabolo stressed the importance of voters being registered in the correct voting district, noting that in local government elections, residents may only vote for a ward councillor in the ward where they ordinarily live.
He also reminded voters that they will not be allowed to vote at a voting station other than the one where they are registered.
While the IEC experienced technical difficulties with its data-free online registration service during the registration weekend, Mamabolo said the online registration portal remained fully functional.
