Independent candidates, movements rank 5th nationally, says Maimane

One South Africa Movement leader Mmusi Maimane says independent
candidates and organisations have garnered an unprecedent number of votes
during Monday’s polls.
Briefing the media on the outcomes of the local government elections on Wednesday, Maimane said the polls had seen the lowest voter turnout history.
“Given these variables that this is the lowest voter turnout in democratic history and both establish political parties have been punished with the ANC projected to share just 7% of the national vote and the DA 4%”
He further explained that collectively, independent candidates and movements are ranked 5th nationally in terms of votes.
“We can confirm that as of 10am this morning that independent candidates, movements and community forums have won an unprecedented of approximately 450 000 votes collectively across the country. This now puts them firmly in 5th position nationally.”
“This gives him hope that project of 2024 where we can live truly in a post-liberation South Africa can come to pass.“
He explained that the results have seen the group collectively surpassing some political parties.
“What this means for independents is that as a voting bloc they are now larger than political parties such as Cope, Freedom Front Plus and others, including the Patriotic Alliance and that means is they are only behind African National Congress, Democratic Alliance, Economic Freedom Fighters and Inkatha Freedom Party.”
