Independent probe into death of Winterveldt pupil on school trip

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has announced an independent investigation into death of a grade 6 pupil from Refalotse Primary School in Winterveldt.
Chiloane visited the school on Tuesday after 12-year-old Mandla Chauke drowned during a school trip last week.
He confirmed that a law firm will be appointed to probe circumstances that led to Chauke's death.
“As the department, we have decided to facilitate a process to appoint an independent law firm to conduct a thorough investigation to establish what transpired. This independent investigation will run parallel to the police’s ongoing investigation".
The department will also compile a report on the management of school excursions.
"We need to prepare our children and let them know that this is where they can go, and this is where they cannot go. We can't stop that experience (excursions). You know that our communities do not see pools often and we have a responsibility to expose our children to these things, as young as they are, so that they can climatise to the development that they are going to be undertaking.”
