The little girl was taken by two men who had earlier escaped from the Leeuwkop prison in Johannesburg.

Malibongwe Masondo and Luvo Mbali were both serving time for murder.

The pair escaped from the centre’s courtyard by making a hole in the fence before making their way to a house in Fourways.

Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says Masondo and Luvo broke into the house and made off with money and the baby.

“The suspects ran off with the child as security guards arrived at the house, they then hijacked a White Toyota double cab and drove towards Diepsloot with another vehicle chasing behind, and landed into the ditch.”

Both were apprehend at the scene.

“The father of the child fetched her and took her to Fourways Hospital. Her condition has not yet been ascertained,” Minnaar added.

The Department of Correctional Services has launched an investigation into the brazen prison break.

“Although the two inmates are back in custody, DCS is seriously disturbed by the incident and will ensure that the investigation leaves no stone unturned,” said the department’s spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

“Law will take its cause in dealing with the two inmates and DCS will be working closely with SAPS in ensuring that justice prevails for the victims who were tormented by these two whilst on the loose.”
