Inmates record 96.2% matric pass rate

Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald announced on Friday that the country's prisoners recorded a 96.2% pass rate during the 2024 matric exams.
In 2023, Correctional Services recorded a pass rate of 93.2%
Groenewald announced the results at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre on Friday morning.
On Monday, the Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube released the final National Senior Certificate results for the matric class of 2024, which shows a 4.4% increase to an overall of 87.3% pass rate.
Groenewald said out of the 171 who sat for exams, 104 could very possibly continue their studies at university level after achieving Bachelor passes.
"There is an increase of 3% on the passing rate from last year, and this is a record passing rate of 96.2% for correctional services."
Thirteen of the country's 17 Correctional Service schools have achieved a 100% pass rate for the National Senior Certificate matric class of 2024.
These include Usethubeni Youth in KZN, Cradock in the Eastern Cape, Thuto Kitso in North West, Brandvlei Youth Centre in the Western Cape, Qalakabusha in KZN, Baviaanspoort Youth Centre in Gauteng, and Ekuseni in KZN.
