Intelligence report the reason behind Gordhan recall: SACP

The South African Communist Party (SACP) says a rogue intelligence unit is behind the recall of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas from an international investment roadshow earlier this week.

SACP 2nd Deputy General Secretary Solly Mapaila told the media they are concerned by the growing abuse of state security organs and their meddling in the daily political life of the country.

"We are aware of a rogue intelligence unit that, in our view, gathers data illegally, produces false reports and feeds them into the political and public domain to smear comrades," said Mapaila.

According to reports, an intelligence report stated that Gordhan was planning secret meetings during the roadshow, to support his battle against President Jacob Zuma.

"This intelligence report is part of the reason given why these comrades were brought back from outside and we still objected to that. A matter of this nature could have been handled far differently. We are unhappy about it. That is why we objected," said Mapaila.

Mapaila confirmed that they also objected to President Zuma's intention to reshuffle the Cabinet, and remove Gordhan and Jonas.

Mapaila said they have laid a complaint with the Inspector-General and the Minister of Intelligence who, they say, have treated their complaint flippantly.

"In this regard we have noted a rising apartheid-era style intimidation and harassment of activists, SACP members and other ANC members."
