Ipid probing death of Gauteng child in hit-and-run
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the death of a 13-year-old girl in a hit-and-run incident.
The girl was hit by a police vehicle in Kwa-Thema, east of Johannesburg on Thursday afternoon.
An eyewitness caught the incident on video.
The footage has since gone viral on social media.
Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa says the police watchdog was informed of the incident by a member of the community.
“Ipid will be investigating a case of death as a result of police action and we do not rule out the fact that we could add more charges on the case as per what we have already witnessed in the docket.
Langa says the police officer allegedly didn’t stop after running over the 13-year-old girl.
“It is alleged this police woman was driving a SAPS-marked vehicle when she ran over a 13-year-old girl who was trying to protect his brother of 7 years old. It is alleged the police officer did not stop instead she went ahead to wherever she was going to and left the dead body on the scene and the little brother injured.
“We will also be charging the duty officer who was supposed to report the matter to us as per the Ipid Act.”
