JHB billing crisis: What to do if you are affected
Updated | By Suné du Toit
A massive error in the City of Johannesburg's customer statement delivery system has resulted in 400 000 accounts not being issued their monthly statements, while a further 97 000 residents have been incorrectly billed for the month of April.

City spokesperson Luyanda Mfeka says concerned residents have several options available to them.
"The first one we recommend is that our clients continue to make their payments based on the historical average billing of their accounts," says Mfeka.
"If clients are unsure about what that is, we request our residents to call the Joburg contact centre on 0860 562 874 or alternatively they can visit us at any one of our customer service centres and we will be more than willing to help."

Mfeka says by the end of this week, they would have sent out billing statements to those who have not received them.
"Hopefully, that should clarify the situation for the affected clients," says Mfeka.
Mfeka says he cannot comment on whether water and power will be cut if the accounts are not paid.
"You have to appreciate that the city is heavily reliant on receiving revenue. Up to 84 percent of our budget is made up of the revenue received from the city's billing."
