JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the department is deeply concerned about what he describes as a disturbing pattern of violence targeting officers, traffic wardens and security personnel across Johannesburg.

The latest incident occurred on Thursday, when JMPD Traffic Warden Reagan Joseph was shot while sitting in his private vehicle, a white Volkswagen Citi Golf.

Two children were reportedly inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting. One child sustained a gunshot wound to the head, while the condition of the second child is being closely monitored. Joseph was declared dead at the scene.

Fihla said the latest shooting is the third violent incident involving JMPD personnel within a week. All three officials were reportedly off duty when the attacks occurred.

On 26 September, JMPD Security Officer Kwanele Buthelezi, 34, was allegedly abducted during a carjacking in Lenasia South and was later found dead in Finetown, Grasmere.

A day later, on 27 September, another JMPD officer was reportedly hijacked and shot in Finetown, Grasmere. The officer remains in hospital receiving medical treatment.

Fihla said the attacks are deeply concerning and that the JMPD is working with the South African Police Service to investigate the cases.

“We urgently appeal to anyone with information regarding these crimes to come forward,” Fihla added.

Members of the public who may have information about the incidents are urged to report it to the relevant law-enforcement authorities.
