JMPD targeted unroadworthy and unlicensed taxis on Wednesday morning.

At least 30 minibus taxis were impounded along Jan Smuts Avenue, William Nicol, Hyde Park, Kingsway and Auckland Park.

A new strategy by traffic authorities, Buya Mthetho, have unleashed crackdown operations on illegal taxis.

"These particular taxis that were impounded are unroadworthy. The operation Buya Mthetho is not only focused at taxi's. The reason why JMPD went there is because of the massive complaints received of bad driving by taxis," says JMPD spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar.

In June, 500 taxis were impounded in Johannesburg.

The latest impounds come as thousands of commuters were left stranded last month after several taxi associations embarked on a strike accusing traffic authorities of unlawfully targeting their vehicles.
