Johannesburg metro police demolished 50 illegal structures in Ennerdale as part of a crackdown on land invasions, while Gauteng authorities investigate unlawful RDP house sales and warn of legal action against offenders.
The Johannesburg metro police have demolished 50 illegal structures in Ennerdale Extension 11, southwest of the city.
Metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla warned that law enforcement is committed to upholding the rule of law within the city regarding land use and urban management.
He said as part of efforts to address rising land invasions in the city, the JMPD has introduced strict measures to address the growing scourge of illegal settlements.
Fihla said on Tuesday Morning a multi-disciplinary team successfully undertook an operation in Ennerdale Extension 11 to remove illegal structures.
"During the operation, 50 illegal structures were demolished, and the materials were removed without resistance," said Fihla.
"This action follows a tense incident at the same site last week, where JMPD officers were violently attacked by a mob during their duties.
"It is unacceptable for officers to be shot at while lawfully enforcing city bylaws. We urge the community to cooperate with law enforcement and resolve land and housing issues through legal means rather than resorting to violence."
Meanwhile, the Gauteng Human Settlements Department has reiterated the sale of a government-subsidised RDP house, particularly to a person who does not qualify as a beneficiary, is unlawful.
This follows reports of an individual allegedly illegally selling RDP houses to foreign nationals in Devon.
The department’s spokesperson, Tahir Sema, says this robs deserving families, many of whom have waited decades for housing opportunities.
“The department has directed the relevant business units to urgently investigate, verify the ownership status of the properties in question, and establish whether any unlawful transfer, where evidence of illegal selling is confirmed.
“The department will pursue all available legal remedies, including the recovery of the affected properties and referral of the matter to the South African Police Service.”
