Jobs for pals allegations involving Tshwane officials emerge at Madlanga Commission
Allegations of possible tender and recruitment irregularities involving senior City of Tshwane officials have intensified at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
South African Police Service (SAPS) organised crime officer in Gauteng, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, faced tough questioning on Friday over his role in what the evidence suggests was facilitating job-related processes linked to the City, despite having no formal role within the municipality.
Evidence before the commission shows Nkosi received job applications and related documents from Tshwane MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Kholofelo Morodi, as well as Tshwane Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Umashi Dlamini.
This comes just a day after another piece of evidence, which placed Morodi at the center of alleged tender irregularities. She was subsequently placed on special leave by the City.
On Thursday, the evidence indicated that Morodi may have influenced tender processes after sharing documents with Nkosi, who was seeking to secure a municipal tender for his brother.
Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson questioned Nkosi on why he was involved in municipal recruitment-related processes.
Nkosi maintained that he was merely assisting applicants, saying he was acting “to make inquiries on their behalf” as part of what he described as youth development.
“I’m a police officer, and when people apply for vacancies, they sometimes ask for assistance or references,” Nkosi told the commission.
However, Chaskalson pressed him on why he was facilitating engagement between applicants and senior municipal officials despite having no formal connection to the City of Tshwane.
“Why would an MMC ask you to follow up on a job application?” Chaskalson asked.
Nkosi responded that he believed it was because he was assisting young people.
ACTIONSA SUSPENDS MORODI AMID ALLEGATIONS
ActionSA Gauteng Provincial Chairperson, Funzi Ngobeni, says the party has also decided to put Morodi on precautionary suspension with immediate effect.
“This necessary decision follows consideration of a formal complaint arising from allegations presented before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry,” Ngobeni said.
He added that the party is committed to ensuring that “the full facts of the matter are ventilated.”
Ngobeni stressed that the suspension is a precautionary step.
“This precautionary suspension does not constitute a finding of wrongdoing, nor does it imply any presumption of guilt. It is a necessary measure to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation while the party awaits the outcomes.”
According to Ngobeni, Morodi “will not participate in party activities, structures, or communication platforms," during her suspension.
He says the matter has been referred to the party's Provincial Ethics and Disciplinary Officer for investigation.
