Joburg council elects city’s first-ever deputy mayor

ANC regional chairperson and Finance MMC, Loyiso Masuku, has been elected unopposed as the City of Johannesburg’s first-ever deputy mayor.

The vote took place on Thursday during council proceedings.

Masuku’s election comes after the city council passed a motion to establish a new deputy mayor position in January, despite criticism from opposition parties.

Joburg follows in the footsteps of the City of Tshwane, which already has a mayor and a deputy mayor.

It also comes amid immense pressure on Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero, amid the city’s water supply crisis and a myriad of other service delivery issues plaguing residents.

Morero is leading a shaky ANC-led coalition government in the city, and now faces yet another motion of no confidence against him, which was set to be heard on Thursday.

Masuku’s previous role as MMC for Finance will be absorbed into the new office.

She replaced Morero as the ANC chair in Joburg at the regional elective conference in December, becoming the first woman to hold the position.

At the time of her election, the party ANC stated that Morero would continue to serve as mayor and would not be removed from office for the time being.
