A search has been activated for a 20-year-old man from Johannesburg who
is presumed to have drowned in Port Edward, KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.
Craig Lambinon from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says the man went missing while swimming with a friend.
“Police search-and-rescue are continuing in a search for a 20-year-old Johannesburg man. NSRI Port Edward duty crew were activated at 08h36 on Monday, following eye-witness reports of a drowning in progress.”
Lambinon says the 19-year-old friend managed to get to safety before getting caught in the rip currents.
“On arrival on the scene a 19-year-old male was safely out of the water suffering non-fatal drowning symptoms and a 20-year-old male was missing in the surf.
“It appears that while they were swimming together, they were caught in rip currents. The teenager attempted to assist his friend who then disappeared under water.”
Lambinon adds that despite an extensive sea and shoreline search there remains no sign of the missing man.
“Bystanders entered the water to search for the missing man. We launched our Jet-Rib accompanied a by police search and rescue diver who are continuing in a search.”
