Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says he has yet to receive formal communication from the ANC amid reports that he is set to be recalled by the party.

According to reports, an urgent and special ANC regional executive committee meeting on Saturday resolved to remove Morero, citing his poor performance at last year’s regional elective conference and governance concerns.

But Morero says the only formal communication he has received was a call for the metro to intensify service delivery.

“The responsibility and the onus are on the leadership to engage with its deployee. However, I must indicate that we are focused on the work. We must ensure that we deliver on the commitments we have made, and as the executive mayor, I have the responsibility to continue my work.

“On all other issues. I'll wait for any other instruction whatsoever.”

News of Morero’s possible recall follows hot on the heels of the election of ANC regional chairperson Loyiso Masuku as the City of Johannesburg’s first-ever deputy mayor.

Masuku replaced Morero as the ANC regional chair during a hotly contested congress in December.

The election was mired in allegations of vote rigging, with Morero filing a formal complaint in a letter to Gauteng provincial task team co-ordinator Hope Papo and ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, challenging the conference outcomes.

At the time of Masuku’s election, the ANC stated that Morero would continue to serve as mayor and would not be removed from office "for the time being".
