Joburg metro police arrest 182 for drunk driving
The Johannesburg metro police have arrested a total of 182 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol over the past week.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the arrests were made during coordinated law enforcement operations and roadblocks across the metro.
"Driving under the influence continues to be one of the leading contributors to fatal road traffic accidents in the City of Johannesburg," he said
Fihla warned that the metro police would maintain high-visibility operations to prevent harm to road users by removing drunk drivers from the roads.
"The department views the high number of arrests with great concern. It indicates that despite constant enforcement, warnings and educational campaigns, many motorists still choose to disregard the law."
Fihla said the City of Johannesburg has a zero-tolerance policy for driving impaired.
He appealed to motorists to drive responsibly, be patient on the roads, and to make use of alternative transport should they plan to consume alcohol.
