The MMC for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, says no major road will be without law enforcement during the Easter holidays.
The MMC for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, says no major road will be without law enforcement during the Easter holidays.
Tshwaku was speaking moments before the launch of the Easter Road Safety Awareness Campaign, led by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport at the N12 provincial highway in Slovo on Monday.
He urged motorists to have their vehicle documents in place, including updated license discs and driver's licenses.
“The licensing department will be open for longer hours for you to ensure that your disc is proper, and all your papers are fine,” said Tshwaku.
The MMC did not specify the extra hours that the licensing department will be operating in.
Tshwaku warned the public against drinking and driving as well as speeding, saying there would be a rollout of roadblocks.
“There is a lot of work that has been done in terms of getting the JMPD (Johannesburg Metro Police Department) in place. So, there are gonna be roadblocks everywhere. When you turn, every place they will be there.”
He urged new car owners to avoid rushing home by driving over the speed limit.
“People start buying nice cars around this time, and they rush home. We are saying do not speed home, take breaks, you will get home, i know that feeling,” Tshwaku said.
Tshwaku said all routes from Gauteng leading to Durban, Limpopo, and Eastern Cape will have roadblocks.
