Joburg recovers R14m from defaulting users

The City of Johannesburg has recovered millions from municipal account holders who were not on the city's system.

The city says 26 account holders have come forward and voluntary started paying their outstanding debts. This has brought in extra R14 million.
Spokesperson Luyanda Mfeka says the accounts were not listed on the municipal system.

"We take this as a good sign. We hope other account holders who have their accounts in arrears and not have been paying the city for years to come forward and make the necessary payments."
Mfeka says residents owe the city around R1 billion.
"These payments go a long way in alleviating the heavy burden carried by many paying residents due to those who have the means to pay for city services, yet refuse to."
Last week mayor Herman Mashaba led a raid which saw the arrest of 24 people for illegal electricity connections.
