Joburg tunnel fire: City Power restores 85% of power
City Power has managed to restore 85% of the power in central Johannesburg following the M1 bridge fire.
The fire, which broke out almost two weeks ago, triggered widespread outages that affected residents in Braamfontein, Newtown, Parktown, the Johannesburg CBD, and surrounding areas.
The fire has been blamed on vandalism and the theft of copper cables.
The utility said it has successfully restored power in the Parktown West area, including Delorme, West, Johnson, Ameshof, Wolmarans West, Showgrounds, Smith East, and Smith West.
Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said they had made significant progress in replacing the burnt and stolen cable.
"Power supply to these customers has been reinstated using two cables from the interconnectors, with two feeder-boards connected from those cables. We have managed to restore nine distributors."
Mangena said the team is monitoring the distributors’ performance to see if they can safely add more load and restore additional customers.
"Another cable has been successfully installed between the Bree substation and Newtown Junction."
"That cable has been livened up, and customers such as Newtown Junction Mall along with surrounding streets are due to be restored today (Monday), pending the finalisation of further assessments," he added.
