The unrest erupted when former Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leaderMangosuthu Buthelezi tried to mediate and called for clam amongst residents of Jeppestown when there have been a spate of attacks.

Spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Wayne Minaar, says one person was shot dead in Denver, and another person was stabbed to death in the city's CBD.

Minaar says police are investigating the two killings.

"Seventeen people were arrested for public violence," adds Minaar.

Minaar says the traffic flow in the area is normal; however, he has advised motorists to avoid Jules street in Malvern.
