Johannesburg awards ‘Freedom of the City’ to ANC struggle stalwarts

Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Parks Tau, on Wednesday bestowed the Freedom of the City on the African National Congress (ANC) stalwarts, George Bizos and Andrew Mlangeni.
“The Freedom of the City is awarded to individuals who are citizens in the city and contributed to South Africa’s struggle for freedom and democracy and to any other person for their exceptional involvement to the betterment of the City of Joburg,” the city said.
“Advocate Bizos has spent much of his career as an ardent defender of political activists and a devoted fighter of human rights, while Dr Mlangeni is a social activist and advocate for sport and recreation."

Mlangeni was a political activist, Rivonia Trialist along with the late international statesman Nelson Mandela and Robben Island political prisoner.
Previous recipients of the award included former president Nelson Mandela and struggle icon Ahmed Kathrada. - ANA
