Johannesburg road closures as looting suspects head to court

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has warned motorists to avoid streets in the vicinity of the magistrates’ court, where the first group of looting suspects will appear on Tuesday.
About 200 suspects that were arrested in relation to last week’s violence, looting and destruction of property are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court from Tuesday morning until the end of the week.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says protesters are expected to gather outside the court in support of those arrested.
“Roads around the precinct will be closed off to traffic from 7am to 4pm. Only court staff, lawyers and suspects will be allowed into the court. No public is allowed,” says Fihla.
Roads affected include Ntemi Piliso Street, Miriam Makeba Street, Marshall Street and Fox Street.
“Officers will be present to control and divert traffic. Road users are advised to avoid and to use alternative routes.”
