Jozini crash: Driver charged with drunken driving, culpable homicide

KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed that the driver of the truck that ploughed into cars and pedestrians in the Jozini CBD, in northern KZN has been charged for drunken driving and culpable homicide.

On Wednesday night, police detained the 48-year-old man after he was suspected of being under the influence. 


The truck ploughed into two buses, one minibus taxi, one bakkie and a car amongst others. 


Eight people were declared dead on the scene, while paramedics treated 32 other people for moderate to critical injuries. 


Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says the driver was arrested on Wednesday evening.


"A 48-year-old suspect is due to appear in the Ubombo Magistrates Court tomorrow following an accident that took place yesterday. 


'It is alleged that the driver knocked eight vehicles, as well as pedestrians and a total of eight people died at the scene. Others were rushed to hospital. He is facing charges of drunken driving and culpable homicide."

CCTV footage has emerged of the horrific crash.


In the video, from cameras at a petrol station across the road, the sugarcane truck can be seen coming down a very busy intersection.


It crashes into a car, taxi and pedestrians before coming to a stop.
