The agency says a detailed flood management plan is in place, focusing on proactive and reactive measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rain or storms.

“The JRA's preparedness drive focuses on 'flood-proofing' key transport links and ensuring public safety. Critical preventative steps already underway include the proactive maintenance of kerb inlets, the identification of flooding hot spots, and the thorough clearing of stormwater channels, culverts, silt, vegetation, and litter at low-lying bridges,” it said in a statement on Tuesday.

Hotspots include the Johannesburg CBD, Ivory Park, and Soweto.

"This year's flood management plan is integral to the JRA's efforts to control the impact of flash floods and climate change on the city's road infrastructure, while simultaneously ensuring the safety of all road users and the general public,” said JRA CEO Zweli Nyathi.

He urged Joburg residents to "take flooding seriously and avoid using flooded bridges and flood-prone roads”.

The agency said that in the event of severe weather, regional standby teams are in place to monitor and respond to flooded areas, prioritising hazards based on their severity and the immediate availability of resources.
